Our training equips participants with the technical and creative knowledge needed for visual communication and audiovisual production.
It is catered to human rights staff and defenders who often witness human rights violations firsthand; and to human rights communicators and activists who wish to communicate visually and effectively. As such, our training prioritises the dignity and security of all those involved.
The trainings are tailored to the needs of our partners - relevant to the work they do. We offer workshops or individual trainings which might include:
VISUALISING HUMAN RIGHTS
Examining the power of human stories in making the fight for human rights personal and emotive to an audience
Learning the elements needed to structure and shape an engaging narrative
STRENGTHS OF VISUALS
Playing to the strengths of the visual medium and maximising its effects.
Researching your subject and choosing suitable events and situations and people to film. Writing a treatment and project proposal.
Creating a suitable workflow, schedule of work and budget.
Getting the most from your film crew.
Learning the basics of sound recording, including how to set up a microphone and recorder.
Familiarising with camera equipment and shooting terminology. Getting hands on experience in filming and what to look for when filming.
Choosing the right equipment for the right scenario, based on a knowledge of different options.
Learning how to shoot and set up an interview technically and creatively. Understanding the art of questioning and how to draw out strong quotes and direct insightful interviews.
SCENES & SEQUENCES
Filming meaningful shots and learning how to construct scenes and sequences.
Preparing for shooting in a variety of situations and learning how to juggle the different technical requirements.
How to expose correctly and use available light or controlled lighting to achieve a mood and effect.
SECURING AND ORGANISING FOOTAGE
Understanding Digital post production options, backing up, protecting and organising footage.
Learning a non-linear editing suite and how to cut clips and sequences.
EDITING AS A CRAFT
Using editing techniques to emotionally strengthen your story and hone the tone and mood.
