On 19-20 April 2010 True Heroes Films organised the conference Human Rights and
(new) Media, in The Hague, the Netherlands in close cooperation with and substantial
funding from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Human Rights and (new) Media was above all a hands-on conference. Several known
and unknown human rights activists from around the world came to The Hague and sharpened
in two days time their knowledge of appropriate media technologies.
When air traffic was severely disturbed by the eruption of the Icelandic volcano
Eyjafjallajökull, the conference was successfully transformed into a virtual
conference for those participants who were forced to stay at home. The power of
new media could not have been shown more clearly.
Several prominent figures and organizations participated in the conference such
as former Prime Mjnister Ruud Lubbers and human rights defender Professor Theo van
Boven Hivos, Amnesty International, Movies that Matter, Oxfam Novib, Human Rights
Watch, WITNESS, Ushahidi and Tactical Tec.
